Secular Sundays – Introduction

This entry is part 1 of 4 in the series Secular Sundays

Why Secular Sundays?

In a rapidly changing world, parents often struggle with the challenge of promoting values and morality in their children. Traditionally, religious teachings have played a central role in this. Yet, for families who aren’t necessarily religious, finding meaningful resources to provide moral values can be a task of its own.

Even for those who are religious COVID-19 brought about some startling changes. In its wake it left many with a void in their life. It left parents holding the bag trying to teach their kids why doing the right thing matters.

Enter the “Secular Sundays Series,” a collection of Sunday school like lessons designed to address this need. In this series, we’ll delve into various topics and themes, offering parents and educators practical insights and activities to help children develop strong moral foundations outside of strictly religious based themes and teachings. Whether you’re an atheist, Christian, agnostic, Buddhist, humanist, any other ideology, or simply looking for ways to explore values beyond religious boundaries, this series is for you.

Secular Sunday is not about promoting a specific belief system but rather about nurturing humanistic values that promote empathy, kindness, ethics, and critical thinking. Here’s why this series is important:

Why Secular Sundays Matter

  1. Inclusivity: In a diverse and pluralistic world, it’s crucial to foster inclusivity. The Secular Sunday Series encourages children to respect and understand different belief systems and worldviews, promoting tolerance and empathy.
  2. Ethical Framework: Teaching ethics without religious dogma allows children to develop a strong moral compass rooted in rationality and empathy. They learn to make ethical choices based on reason and compassion and not because of fear, shame, or potential for a reward.
  3. Critical Thinking: Encouraging critical thinking skills empowers children to question, analyze, and evaluate the world around them. This series helps them develop the ability to think critically about values, beliefs, and ethical dilemmas.
  4. Resilience: Life often brings challenges and setbacks. By emphasizing resilience, children can develop the inner strength to face adversity, learn from failures, and persevere in the pursuit of their values. Each lesson will include a modern real world example. Examples from religion can be used in addition if that is one’s preference.
