We fear what we don’t know

Often times I catch myself not agreeing with someone because whatever reason. When I look inside myself, what I find myself really doing is just not liking them because they’re different. Differences are something we fear naturally. We gravitate to people we are similar to with similar thinking.

If we end this life only knowing people who are just like us it would be a wasted life.

I’ve had the pleasure of living among a different culture and getting to know them. I spent two years living as close to a Japanese lifestyle as I could and getting to know so many people completely different from me. This experience did so much for me. It made me question so much about how I act and how I think.

I thought I knew about the world but I stepped outside of myself and the circle of people I knew and realized I was so wrong.

Luckily for me it was my sole job while living there to meet people and get to know them. I learned about their view on life, views on death, their goals, their ambitions, etc. One of the biggest things I learned I feel is about how they talk with their kids. In Japan the people I met and really got to know really invested in their kids. They spent time to teach them and guide them.

My reason in writing this is my desire for the world to think more outside the box.

Get to know someone!

Everywhere there is opportunities to look up from your phone or book.  I know we all live busy lifestyles but there are always times during the day when you’re just sitting there waiting to do something and you can chat with the person next to you.

It’s a shame that with modern times people don’t know their neighbors anymore. People don’t know the people in the next cubicle.

Get to know someone!

When you expand who you know you are growing in so many ways. You learn their point of view and yours just might change. You learn what they’re passionate about and you may have just found your next passion in life. You learn their ambitions and you may just be inspired in ways you’ve never even thought of.

The following image I think sums it up.

So I’ll say it once again: Get to know someone!

That’s what I’m going to do at least…
